Filing

When it comes to filing the mail we are the best. First if letter is not hand-written or does not contain money (we can smell cheques and postal orders and cash) then put in bin, second at the end of the day empty contents of bin onto open fire. Major rule - cats never read bank statements because we are going to die one day and someone else can worry about it. Parcels are the most fun because they always contain something nice.

And so that was Kissmas

Fabulos meal at Ye Olde Tyneside. Back to Mike's for poker - I can bluff them to tears! Then Mike's mum who is Spanish taught us a Spanish card game. Knackered today - so no boxing. Out of the 20 that were coming six came down with really bad flu but we managed! Phil and Sue just came back from Cuba and said it was the worst vacation they had had in their lives. Mike is coming out to Spain with me in January - so I am staying two weeks instead of one. The only downside to Kissmas was I had the most terrible EDS flare up and had to take OraMorph.

Hearts

I'm into hearts at the moment. I have a private tutor now because I can't get on with classes of people painting Norfolk scenes. He is teaching me printing methods, using different bits and pieces as background - the blue one was painted on silver foil and the other on gold foil. It is such a beautiful symbol to use and no-one knows if a splodge is a mistake or intentional! I am next embarking on a huge canvas which we are going to do together - he one half and me the other on the nature of the colour blue - there will be an empty space in the middle for another artist to fill in. Can't wait.

Greetings

The kindness of friends and strangers

I love it when my friends call round and say 'would you like to go out somewhere - I'll drive'. I'm quite capable of driving but it takes so much energy. I love it when they just show up and we do something stupid like play dominoes. I loved it when Mike showed up this morning (just after I'd gotten back from Cromer Hospital) and said 'I've come to walk the dog'.
He must be psychic because I'd fallen that morning and dislocated my wrist and a complete stranger came up, thought it was broken, called the paramedics and came back with blankets and hot chocolate and took Treacle into his house. These little acts of kindness are so important to me - they are worth more than any treasure, money or gifts and I thank the Goddess that I have friends with so much heart.
Mike is coming back later on and we are going to paint together and he is bringing a little owl.
I wish you all contentment, pleasure and good company at this time of year.

Maybe you will understand me more

Last but not least - my four favorite images from Benidorm

More people

When these two started to play a small crowd gathered and started clapping and singing along - a bit like a flash mob but spontaneous rather than planned.
All outdoor exercise equipment is free and can be used by anyone.
Two Dutchmen living in Spain and cooking oliebollen (usually for New Year but who cares) in the Christmas market....delicious and 50 eurocents!

More animals

Little dogs are the favorite in Benidorm as most people live in apartments. In the parks, the streets and on the promenades there are free poopy bags - whatever next! Means-tested vet treatment.

Tabi and Hubbie

My favorite graffiti in Benidorm

I love graffiti...life would be much more boring... I can't go anywhere without noticing graff and I'm glad it remains illegal, that's the fun of it...

UK bound

JimC Teddy enjoyed his travels so much...he is becoming a celebriteddy. I didn't think you would want to see photos of me sobbing as we left Benidorm but the good news is I'm going back in January.
Just a few details about this trip:
Flew from Norwich airport (2.5 hours), transferred to four star hotel (45 mins), full board, free indoor/outdoor pools and jacuzzis, free sauna, seventh floor facing south so we had sun from 8.30am to 4.30pm. How much? £250 each.

Benidorm 7-10 Dec 2010 ... Day Six

The advantages of going away somewhere warm before Christmas are: 1. It is warm (and in some cases hot - the highest the temp reached was 24C. 2. You can forget about Christmas when you get back to the UK.

Benidorm 7-10 Dec 2010 ... Day Five

We swam in the sea, I swam in the pool - it was really cold but so invigorating and eases pain. I was the only one that week! The pool was used for another reason by Pepe ( one of the cemetery cats) - they stroll over to the hotel in the morning and get some treats from the kitchen and then drink from the outside pool.

Benidorm 7-10 Dec 2010 ... Day Four

Food - of great importance to the Spanish. The food at our hotel was of extremely high quality - a mix of Spanish, European and a polite nod to the English. We were on full board but sometimes had breakfast, lunch or supper out because the cuisine was fresh and extraordinarly inexpensive. The first photo shows coffee, a half tumbler of Baileys and cake for 1,50 euros.
Then you can wander down the street and pluck an orange or two straight from the trees which line the boulevards, promenades and streets.
The cake shops are enough to make you faint with pleasure when you walk by - this one is a special Christmas bread. I had what I thought to be a
wafer covered with thin chocolate but somehow they had sneaked in enough caramel to make my teeth start singing.
However, cheap doesn't mean low quality. Hubbie and I had a lunch for 5 euros - the first course three fresh sardines on bread with olives, then tortilla with salad and a pudding of glorious eggy custardy brulee AND a glass of Bailey's. It was a tiny little cafe and each day you would get just one choice but everything was fresh.

Benidorm 7-10 Dec 2010 ... Day Three

We have never been to Benidorm before and our opinion had been influenced by the lager lour culture, orange ex-pats with leathered skins, TV programs. We were extremely surprised to find a place not full of drunken, vomiting Brits but a town full of contradictions unrelated to the beer, booze and brawling. Benidorm is a place of tall hotels (the tallest 52 floors) and apartment blocks set against a dramatic backdrop of rugged mountains. It has its own micro-climate due to the protection of these mountains and its positioning in Spain and this keeps the weather clement and on average around 19C.
Also walking (hubie walked - I buggied) we would come across beautiful
sculptures in the middle of roundabouts, in small parks on the promenade and the beautiful headstones in the cemetery.
Interspersed amongst the modern skyscrapers were tiny Spanish houses, bars and restaurants, some perched precariously on rocks or set into the hillside.
Personally I wouldn't call Benidorm beautiful but it has a charm and character and an appeal that is fascinating.
The Spanish has managed to rid Benidorm of the lager yobs and this has now become a popular holiday destination for Spanish families. By 2018 there will be a high speed connection train from Madrid to Benidorm.
Regeneration work is staggering - 11 million euros on a beautiful 5 km promenade, the re-structuring of tatty hotels, a remarkable cleaning system that keeps the town spotless, efficient and regular buses, trains and trams with the lowest fares I have paid anywhere.
Today at 8.30am it was 19C
