Since moving away from The Netherlands, adrift from St Nicolaas, Christmas Eve never felt the same. This year, however, I’ve 'borrowed' a celebration inspired by the book Night Tree by Eve Bunting, in which a family annually visits a forest to decorate a tree with edible food for the animals, I've planned an evening feast for the wildlife in our garden.
I spent the past week making edible ornaments made from seed, popcorn, and dried fruits for the squirrels, voles, mice, and numerous other animals and birds who forage in our garden. Tonight I will string my edible ornaments onto the trees and bushes and hope they enjoy their Christmas feast.
